Miley Cyrus on Why She Doesn’t Want to Tour
Miley Cyrus has further elaborated on why touring isn’t “healthy” for her. In her “Used to Be Young” TikTok series, the singer-songwriter shared how much being on the road has taken a toll on her. 30-year-old Cyrus said in a video she posted Sunday, “What people don’t really understand about touring is the show is only 90 minutes, but that’s your life. If you’re performing at a certain level of intensity and excellence, there should be an equal amount of recovery and rest.”
She added, “There’s a level of ego that has to play a part that I feel gets overused when I’m on tour, and once that switches on, it’s hard to turn it off. And I think when you’re training your ego every single night to be active, that’s the hardest switch for me to turn off.” The “Flowers” singer says the daily relationship between her and other human beings as “subject and observer isn’t healthy” for her because it erases her “humanity” and “connection.” Without the two, Cyrus says she “can’t be a songwriter, which is my priority.”

This isn’t the first time Miley expressed not having a “desire” to tour. Back in May, she opened up about how she feels about touring to British Vogue. She asked, “Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own? And, you know what… I love performing but pretty much for them,” Cyrus said of her fans. “Singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love. There’s no connection. There’s no safety. I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience,” she said while shrugging. “It will set itself on fire all by itself.”

She later took to Twitter to clarify her comments, as fans took that personally. “For clarity, I feel connected to my fans NOW more than ever. When I win, WE win,” Cyrus wrote in a statement at the time. She continued to state that she doesn’t feel comfortable sleeping on a moving bus. “It isn’t what’s best for me right NOW, & if you’ve been following my career, you know that I always change, and the way I feel about that could too.”
