Rita Ora Was The One Who Proposed to Taika Waititi
Taika Waititi says Rita Ora switched up the gender norms for their engagement. The filmmaker, 47, revealed this news in a new joint interview with Ora, 32, with Vogue. Celebrating the couple’s one-year wedding anniversary the Thor: Ragnarok director said that the “Praising You” singer was actually the one who popped the question. Waititi confessed to the publication, “She proposed to me, and I said ‘yes’ instantly.”
While the pair first met at a barbecue in 2018 that Taika hosted at his house in Los Angeles, it wasn’t until 2021, when they were both in Australia for work, that they began dating. Rita popped the question while they were vacationing in Palm Springs last summer. The couple planned an impromptu wedding a few weeks later in LA on August 4.
Rita and Taika have been getting a kick out of media outlets reporting false news surrounding their wedding. Now, the couple is sharing how it all really went down. Taika adds that those in attendance were just a small group of friends.
“There were about eight people there — just close friends and family and parents on Zoom,” Waititi said. The New Zealander noted that the small guest list included his daughters Te Kāinga o te Hinekāhu, 11, and Matewa Kiritapu, 7. Waititi shares his children with his ex-wife Chelsea Winstanley. Meanwhile, the British singer-songwriter was accompanied by her sister Elena.

Sharing their never-before-seen wedding with Vogue on Instagram, the sixth and final slide shows they got an Elvis impersonator for the after-party. There was also a cake that read, “We’re married bitches!!!” Ora says the affair was so low-key that “it was almost like another day. We just all dressed up and got married.”
Last month, she told People in an interview that after the ceremony, she went into the studio and created the title track off her new album, You & I. She said of her husband, “My biggest supporter and advocate is Taika.” Rita hopes to “one day” expand their family. “That’s always been a dream of mine.”
