Dua Lipa’s Upcoming Album Is Inspired By ‘70s-Era Psychadelia’
Dua Lipa attends the World Premiere of "Barbie" at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall on July 09, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.
Dua Lipa’s upcoming third album is due for release next year. In a new interview with The New York Times Style Magazine, the “One Kiss” singer said the next record will still be pop, unless her “fans have a meltdown.”
However, the 27-year-old artist revealed that she’s developing a new sound that will be inspired by “1970s-era psychedelia.” The Grammy-award-winning artist will be working with a smaller group of songwriting collaborators. One of which is rumored to be Kevin Parker of the Australian psych-rock band Tame Impala.
Though Lipa’s kept other details about her forthcoming album under wraps because it is still in development, she says the process is “insular and exciting.” Because her 2020 album Future Nostalgia leaked during the pandemic, Lipa can’t help having “this nervous feeling.” On top of that, she is aware that there is no way to gauge what the audience’s reaction will be.
As for her brand, Lipa discussed how she chooses to write music based on her own interests and obsessions rather than including too much of her personal life in her music. She says, “I think it’s a marketing tool: How confessional can you be? I also don’t put so much of my life out there for people to dig into the music in this weird, analytical way.”

Despite that, Dua says the next album will be “more personal.” That isn’t the reason why she’s doing it. After “bawling my eyes out” re-watching the 2020 documentary, The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Dua was inspired. In the film, someone talks about “music that just makes your body feel good,” she explains. “Those are the songs I get attached to — that’s the kind of feeling I want to convey.”
Over the weekend, Lipa shared behind-the-scenes on the making of “Dance The Night,” which is featured on the Barbie soundtrack.
