Amanda Bynes Placed On Psychiatric Hold After Roaming Streets Naked
Amanda Bynes has been placed on a psychiatric hold. She was found roaming the streets of L.A. naked and alone over the weekend. Per gossip website TMZ, an eyewitness saw the former child star walking downtown in Los Angeles early Sunday morning (March 19) without any clothes on.
The Hairspray actress apparently waved a car down to tell the driver she was coming down from a psychotic episode. She then called 911 for herself and was taken to a nearby police station, the gossip site reports. Bynes, 36, was then evaluated by a mental health team, to be placed on a 5150 psych hold. Per the Orange County Department of Education, a 5150 hold allows an adult who is experiencing a mental health crisis to be involuntarily detained for a 72-hour psychiatric hospitalization due to the threat of harm to self, others, or being gravely disabled.
She Wasn’t Physically Hurt
Despite Bynes being in a potentially dangerous area to have a psychotic episode, it appears the actress wasn’t physically hurt. A source close to Amanda told TMZ Monday that she is currently hospitalized. And that she will likely continue to receive care for several days. Though the 5150 hold only lasts 72 hours, it can be extended if they can’t meet one of the three basic criteria:
- Danger to others – There must be an intent to harm a specific person and
that person has the means to carry out their intent. Their harmful intent
must be related to their mental illness. - Danger to self – There is an intent to harm oneself.
- Gravely disabled – The person must be unable to avail themselves of food,
clothing, or shelter as a result of their mental disorder.
The law also states that the evaluator shall consider the person’s mental illness history. As we’ve previously reported, the Amanda Show star was held under a conservatorship that lasted 9 years. Her conservatorship was officially terminated a year ago. Amanda’s mother was her conservator since 2013 when it was clear she was having issues when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After a series of bizarre incidents — including one where she set her neighbor’s driveway on fire, almost engulfing her dog in flames — she was sent to a psychiatric ward for treatment.
Amanda was supposed to attend ’90s Con in Connecticut this weekend but canceled due to illness. Her All That co-star Kel Mitchell addressed her absence. “I’ve just been praying for her,” Mitchell told ET. “It’s awesome to see she’s doing better. Which is great. We’re just continuing to pray for her on her journey, and it’s answered prayers that she’s doing a lot better.”
