Adrianne Curry Deletes Twitter Amid Backlash For Body-Shaming Melanie Lynskey
Adrianne Curry, best known for being the winner of America’s Next Top Model season 1, has deactivated her Twitter account after receiving backlash for body-shaming The Last of Us actress Melanie Lynskey.
In a tweet that was shared in a screenshot by Lynskey, Curry wrote: “Her body says life of luxury… not post apocolyptic [sic] warlord. Where is Linda Hamilton when you need her?” Lynskey was introduced in the fourth episode. Her character, Kathleen, is a leader of rebels who overthrew their repressive government. Though her character seemed weak at first, viewers quickly learned that she is ruthless and vindictive.
The Yellowjackets star called out Curry on her criticism: “Firstly- this is a photo from my cover shoot for InStyle magazine, not a still from HBO’s The Last Of Us. And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned & executed an overthrow of FEDRA. I am supposed to be SMART, ma’am. I don’t need to be muscly. That’s what henchmen are for.”

Speaking more about her Last of Us character, Lynskey said, “Women, and especially women in leadership positions, are scrutinized incessantly. Her voice is too shrill. Her voice is too quiet. She pays too much attention to how she looks. She doesn’t pay enough attention to how she looks. She’s too angry. She’s not angry enough.” She added in the thread: “I understand that some people are mad that I’m not the typical casting for this role. That’s thrilling to me. Other than the moments after action is called, when you feel like you’re actually in someone else’s body, the most exciting part of my job is subverting expectations.”

Fans of Lynskey burned Curry with tweets that read things like: “The Ex Mrs. Peter Brady coming in hot with opinions on women’s bodies after standing in front of Tyra Banks for weeks getting opinions about her appearance is a lazy twitter take but not surprising.”
Following the deactivation of her Twitter, Curry took to her Facebook to explain why she shut it down, arguing that her comments weren’t personal and complaining that Lynskey “screen shotted it and posted it for her fans to BULLY me over an opinion on a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. LOL. Actors and actresses that cannot take criticism of characters they play Is absurd to me. I acted in a film that people tore my character to SHREDS. I am not the character. It wasn’t a direct attack. I survived.
Anyway, I’m keeping off Twitter till her fans stop berating me for not finding her feminine stature suitable for warlord status. She even cropped out the tweet where I praised her hourglass frame as the PERFECT body in the eyes of most men. Now, I think I’ll keep my NERD movie/show criticism to myself. These people take it too personally.”
Last night, Curry wrote: “I think people are hurting so badly inside….the only thing they know how to do anymore to dampen that pain is to attack others. Mole hills are made into mountains so that people can express their anger and outrage. As much as it can sometimes hurt when you find yourself the target of these things….sometimes, it is best to view the ones spewing hate as someone who is suffering. Pain lies beneath the surface of anger.”
