Eddie Murphy Jokes About Will Smith Slap During Golden Globes
Last night at the Golden Globes, Eddie Murphy jokingly referred to Will Smith’s infamous moment at the Oscars last year when he went on stage to slap Chris Rock. Murphy was honored at the 2023 Golden Globes as the recipient of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, which recognizes “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” and is named after its first recipient, director Cecil B. DeMille.
During his speech, Murphy thanked his family, friends, and colleagues while he gave aspiring actors and comedians some notable advice which included the infamous slap joke.
“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity, and peace of mind. It’s a blueprint, and I’ve followed it my whole career,” he said.
“It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f—ing mouth!”
Backstage, Murphy spoke to Extra about the joke of the night and how fond of both Smith and Rock.
“I love Will,” he said. “I love Will and I love Chris.”
When asked if Jimmy Kimmel, who will be hosting the 2023 Oscars should reference the slap, Murphy gave some insight on what he would choose to do if it were him.
“If I was hosting the Oscars, I would have worked that joke that I did in there some kind of way. I think you have to say something but, you know, then you move on.”
Murphy wasn’t the only one to make fun of the infamous slap last night either. During the telecast, Tuesday night (Jan. 10), host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael referenced the slap. “While we were on commercial, we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for best portrayal of masculinity on television, so please give it up for Will Smith. Please! Please!”
Rock Hudson was a famous film and television star in the 1950s who later died in 1985 from AIDS-related complications. After his death, the actor’s coworkers claimed that he was gay which was an “open secret” in Hollywood.
