John Mayer On His Acting Career: ‘I’m My Own Agent’
John Mayer may be known for his singing and guitar skills, but he has a new venture in store for us — appearing in B.J. Novak’s forthcoming dark comic thriller, Vengeance.
Speaking with ET on the red carpet of the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Mayer, 44, said that he joined the cast to be a part of his friend’s directorial debut. Novak is known best for his work as a writer and actor on The Office. “I like being in my friends’ movies,” Mayer said, adding that while he enjoys the experience, “I don’t really have a brain for acting. I like when my friends call me and say, ‘You wanna do stuff?'”
“B.J. is very thoughtful on where he wants it to go,” Mayer explained. Mayer acts as “a parody” version of a rockstar and says the opening scene is “a great moment between two guys that are smart but dumb. The way we are talking it’s like we are only ever listening to ourselves talk.”
Mayer then declared, “I’m my own agent for film.” The Grammy-award-winning artist seemed to leave the door open for future acting collaborations if his friends are involved. “It happens just when friends go, ‘Hey I have an idea for you,’ I go, ‘Yeah, I’ll do it.'”
Vengeance hits theaters July 29. Ben Manalowitz (Novak) is a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with. The rest of the cast includes Issa Rae, Ashton Kutcher, Boyd Holbrook, J. Smith-Cameron, and Dove Cameron. Watch the trailer below:
