Alec Baldwin Quit Twitter After Backlash Over Tweet
Alec Baldwin once again deactivated his Twitter account, explaining why in a nine-minute long Instagram video.
The video shows Baldwin driving in his car at night, starting off with saying, “I don’t want to drag other people into my debates or what have you, but I noticed that someone said ‘Oh, this actress’ — who I won’t mention ‘has switched accents during the press for her show from her accent from another country to an American accent.’ And I just wrote ‘Oh that’s interesting.'”
The actress that he was referring to was Gillian Anderson and her using her American accent while accepting a Golden Globe Sunday for The Crown. Baldwin addressed the news of the accent-switch earlier in the day, tweeting, “Switching accents? That sounds … fascinating.” That is when Twitter slammed Alec’s take:

Except Anderson was really raised in London. Born in the US and raised in PR and London.

Alec said you “can’t do any irony on Twitter. You can’t do any irony in the United States anymore. It’s such an uptight, stressed out place. Such an unpleasant place right now, but I wanted to say the person I was referring to was someone I’m a huuuge fan of.”
He goes on to say that comment was “meant to illustrate the point that I find that the multicultural expressions of anyone for that matter, whatever of those expressions are important to you, that’s your business. But I find, that of course on Twitter, where all of the a—holes of the United States and beyond go to get their degrees of a–holiness.”
Some people on Twitter did share Alec’s views of Anderson’s accent-switch:
I feel so uncomfortable knowing Gillian Anderson is American and not British

Just had my mind blown discovering @GillianA doesn’t actually have an English accent in real life🤯

This controversy about Gillian's American accent makes me laugh. SHE IS American and lives in London, she is bidialectical, what's strange? 🤦♀️🤦♀️ pic.twitter.com/ABqK7Vf5Nm

Page Six reported Anderson had a lot of time to hone her British accent, as she spent several years living in London, and has said in the past that she often slips back and forth between accents.
Interestingly — as we recently reported — Hilaria Baldwin was scrutinized for faking her accent while growing up in Massachusetts.
