4 Unique Charities that Help Fight Hunger
When it comes to fighting hunger in the United States, the obvious sources of assistance many of us think of are food banks and soup kitchens. While we cannot stress the importance of those two sources, many Americans have also thought of non-traditional ways to help those dealing with food insecurity.
Here are just four unique charities around the country that help fight hunger.
Move For Hunger
Getting a new place but don’t feel like bringing the contents of your entire pantry or fridge? Contact Move for Hunger! Move for Hunger is an organization that partners with local moving companies that will not only move all of your belongings to your new home but will donate any unopened, non-perishable items to local food pantries you don’t feel like packing.
Food Forward
Food Forward is a Los Angeles-based charity that collects surplus fresh fruits and vegetables from a variety of places, from farmers markets to even backyard fruit trees, and donates them to help fight hunger and food waste.
C.A.N.S. 4 Cuts
The concept is simple and absolutely brilliant: Founded by Lamont “Jaye” Joseph, C.A.N.S 4 Cuts partners with local barber shops and salons where those looking for a haircut can donate canned goods in exchange for a haircut. All donated items are then used to stock local food banks.
City Harvest’s “Skip Lunch Fight Hunger”
New York City’s City Harvest is a “food rescue” organization that aims to limit food waste by collecting surplus food for those in need. One of their fundraising initiatives is “Skip Lunch Fight Hunger,” where they ask New Yorkers to bring their lunch to work and donate the money they would’ve used to go out for lunch. In 2018, they were able to raise $1.1 million!
