Looks Like Johnny Depp Won’t Be Solving Biggie’s Murder For A While
‘City of Lies’ has officially been pulled from the movie schedule a month before it was supposed to hit theatres, according to Billboard.
The movie, which was supposed to open on September 7th has been removed, and no new date has currently been set.
Billboard notes after the “damaging Rolling Stone profile in June,” (which, if you saw the caricature and description of who Johnny Depp is now, according to Rolling Stone‘s writers, you’d call it damaging too), it has been hard for people to promote the movie, even for professional publicity campaigns.
‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ seems to still be going strong, despite Depp’s casting as the villain, but considering the cult following of anything from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it’s hard to say that it would take a dramatic hit to cripple the film completely. ‘City of Lies,’ however, shows Depp as the main character, playing LAPD Detective Russell Poole.
Wait – does that sound familiar? It’s because ‘Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.’ already covered this story, with Jimmi Simpson as Poole. And with the strong look-alikes playing Biggie and Tupac, as well as a task force led by Josh Duhamel, do we really need to see this story again?
Personally, I would watch it again, retold, but I also have a unique curiosity about the East Coast / West Coast Rap wars. It also doesn’t help Depp’s case that he punched a crewmember and was sued, to which the crewmember was fired when he refused to not sue Depp, on top of the alleged abuse of his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Either way, we can’t see the movie never being released, only because it would be a worse loss for them to not make money on the film at all than it be released and get no revenue in ticket sales.
It’s depressing to see Captain Jack Sparrow fall this far, but it looks like the best place for Johnny Depp to hide now is Tortuga.
