Obesity is a major problem in the United States, and it's only getting worse. But which city in North Carolina is among the fattest in the country? We take a look.

It’s not a shocking revelation that Americans are generally obese, but it may be a bit surprising to learn which city in North Carolina is among the fattest in the country.

Our good friends over at WalletHub.com set out to rank the top 100 United States metro markets, and see which of them is the fattest.

And with the pandemic keeping us indoors for the most part the last couple of years, it’s not surprising that things are getting a bit worse.

WalletHub put a whole bunch of numbers together in 19 key indicator categories to get the rankings, and according to the numbers, Winston-Salem is technically the fattest metro city in North Carolina, coming in at 16 overall.

Technically, the Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach metro of South Carolina also includes a part of North Carolina, but we’re not taking that into account for these purposes.

On a national level, there’s a recurrent theme for the cities at the top (which is the bottom) of this list. They are all southern cities, and happen to mostly be centered around excellent food as well. The “top” spot went to McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas. The city on the border of Texas and Mexico has some of the best mixture of barbecue and Mexican food you’ll ever find.

As for the healthiest cities, well there’s a theme there too. Most of them are major urban cities, in cultural hotspots, with healthy living cultures. No. 100 (so, the most healthy) on the list is the Boston metro area.

So what are the fattest cities in North Carolina and across the United States? Let’s take a look:

Of note, these rankings include just metro areas, so smaller cities like Fayetteville aren’t included on this list. Our numbers sort of fall in with Raleigh.
