Today is Sunday, Sept. 3, the 246th day of 2022. There are 119 days left in the year.  Tomorrow, September 4th is Labor Day.

On Sept. 3, 1783, representatives of the United States and Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the Revolutionary War.

In 1939, Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany, two days after the Nazi invasion of Poland; in a radio address, Britain’s King George VI said, “With God’s help, we shall prevail.”

In 2019, Walmart said it would stop selling ammunition for handguns and short-barrel rifles, and the store chain requested that customers not openly carry firearms in its stores; the announcement followed a shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas that left 22 people dead.

A few reminders to put on your calendar…The Cumberland County Fair continues Today thru Sunday the 10th at the Crown Complex.  Details at CrownComplexNC.com!

This Thursday the 7th through Saturday the 9th, Fayetteville’s Lafayette Society spearheads the celebration of the Birthday of Gilbert du Motier,  better known as the Marquis du Lafayette, the namesake of our city…He was the 19 year old French nobleman who became Commander George Washington’s favorite general in our Country’s battle for freedom!  The celebration of Lafayette is inspiring!  All details at LafayetteSociety.org.

Note this coming Saturday, September 9th is also the first-ever, one-of-a-kind North Carolina POW-MIA Recognition Luncheon at the Crown Complex Ballroom from 12 noon to 3, tickets are still available at Eventbrite.com!

Save lunchtime Tuesday, September 12th  for the Child Advocacy Center’s 30 for 30 Luncheon, honoring 30 years of the Child Advocacy Center’s Protecting Children, Stopping Abuse and providing a place for healing and hope!  See CACFayNC.org for ticket information.  Attend if you can!

Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist honors Women with their upcoming Women’s Week Celebration Wednesday the 13th – thru Sunday the 17th.  We’ll hear more on next Sunday’s Talkback.

Three different segments on Talkback today….the first with Sheena Craver, a 17-year veteran 911 telecommunicator in Cumberland County who has risen through the ranks to become a Telecommunications assistant manager in Cumberland County.  She wants to recruit more…and is joined by two members of Cumberland County’s Human Resources Department to explain a special two-day event coming up this Friday and Saturday!

(Sheena Craver, Amanda Turnmire and Ebonee Moore-Brantley Interview)

Thank you Sheena Craver, Amanda Turnmire and Ebonee Moore-Brantley.

Remember the two-day hiring event this Friday AND Saturday – 10am to 2pm both days – the 8th and 9th) at 500 Executive Place in Fayetteville (the relatively new Emergency Services Building) in the general area behind Harris Teeter on Raeford Road – just follow Executive Place.

In the aftermath of last Wednesday night’s brush with Tropical Storm Idalia, I’d give us a Passing Grade on Hurricane Preparedness overall…we had time to prepare and act on positive answers and solutions to storm readiness and survival.    ..although we weren’t severely tested this time.  Only you can give yourself the most honest grade.  And It’s been 4 years since Florence came through and we’re probably due for (shall we call it) a “situation. “   That’s why we won’t stop discussing storm readiness.  Today is Labor Day Sunday….the first days of September…lots of time to fortify our homes and family approach to disaster preparation.

(Tom Kamber Interview)

Thanks, Tom Kamber…and feel free to add AARP.org/DisasterPrep to your list of trustworthy web pages.

Finally, on Today’s Talkback, some tougher news from the Cumberland County Public Health department and three of its communicable disease experts, Public Health Director Dr. Jennifer Green, Alba Nataly and Megan Jenkins.  A reminder that tough problems require honest, straight-ahead talk and blunt terminology.  WE won’t shy away from either as we discuss real problems and their accompanying solutions.  The first to speak is Alba Nataly and the next female voice will be Dr. Jennifer Green.  Both are alarmed , because in just the last few weeks, Cumberland County has experienced a sharp uptick in new cases of HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) as well as other Sexually Transmitted Infections….and it’s time as a community to stop its spread.

(Dr. Green, Alba Nataly & Megan Jenkins interview)

To ask a question or make a FREE appointment with Cumberland County Public Health, at 1235 Ramsey Street – just across the parking lot from the Cumberland County Department of Social Services at 1225 Ramsey Street.  You can also call (910) 433-3600.  (910) 433-3600.  Or – the web – search cumberlandcountync.gov.   Then in departments – key public health.  Once there, go to clinical services and S.T.I.   You’ll be treated with respect.
