Today is Sunday. August 27th 239th day of the year…126 left in 2023 …8 days until Labor Day

In 1859, Edwin L. Drake drilled the first successful oil well in the United States, at Titusville, Pa.

In 2005, Coastal residents jammed freeways and gas stations as they rushed to get out of the way of Hurricane Katrina, which was headed toward New Orleans.

August 27th, 2009 Mourners filed past the closed casket of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.  Jaycee Lee Dugard, kidnapped when she was 11, was reunited with her mother 18 years after her abduction in South Lake Tahoe, California.

Just yesterday, we all lost a friend – a cultural icon (Bob Barker)

For as much of an animal lover as Bob Barker was…It’s worth another reminder to would-be pet owners in our area…you have until Thursday to willingly offer your home to a new forever friend at no adoption cost….(Clear the Shelter PSA)

For more information on Clear the Shelter, visit online at CumberlandCountyNC.gov/departments….then choose animal services.  The last 4 days of no adoption fees for Dogs and Cats through the month of August at Cumberland County Animal Services!

The mission of Purple Heart Foundation of North Carolina is to unite communities in honoring Purple Heart recipients and their families, while fostering fellowship among combat-wounded veterans.  This year in Fayetteville on Saturday, September 9th, at 12 noon,  A first of its kind in the State of North Carolina event is scheduled in Fayetteville’s Crown Ballroom.  A $25 per ticket to the general public catered luncheon will be held to Recognize Families of Prisoners of War and soldiers Missing in Action (there are about 1500 missing soldiers across the USA and 38 across North Carolina – but down from 39 just a few weeks back.)  The luncheon is open to all ticketed individuals – and includes a memorial service to honor our special guests, as well as distinctive recognition for those who remain Missing in Action.

Each POW and MIA family will receive a thoughtful gift as a way to acknowledge their sacrifice and know they are not forgotten.

As the first of our Talkback guests today reminds us, tickets to the event about two weeks from today (on Saturday, September 9th) are still available at Eventbrite.com (Spelled EVENT-B-R-I-T-E-dot-COM.) and searching for NC POW MIA Recognition….. NC POW MIA Recognition…..

(Andrea Tebbe Interview)

We must always remember those who remain missing and the families who continue to wait for their return…and remind them they are not forgotten. Search

Traditional-year School starts tomorrow in Cumberland County for 50,000 students.  Our own Gilbert Baez Jr. caught up with Dr. Lyndsey Whitley, Associate Superintendent of Communication for Cumberland County Schools.  Baez first asked Dr. Whitley to describe his position with the school district.

Good luck to all students starting school in Cumberland County.

And because Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church is always committed to public service, we’re getting a visit from Candy Bethea and Whitney Shipp to fill us in on Women’s Week at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist.  It runs Wednesday, September 13th through Sunday the 17th.

Candy and Whitney will return next week to tell us more!

To read more information, their website is LewisChapel.org.  And Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church is all over social media!
