The Public Schools of Robeson County Multilingual Learner Program has been named an official event host for the 2026 North Carolina Science Festival. This selection marks the first time the district will participate as a partner in the statewide science education initiative produced by UNC's Morehead Planetarium & Science Center.

PSRC's fourth annual STEAM Day for multilingual learner families earned a spot on the official 2026 NCSciFest statewide calendar. Scheduled for April 18 at UNC Pembroke, the event will bring together families, students, and educators.

The program will participate in a virtual introductory session on Feb. 11. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

"Being selected as an official event host is an exciting recognition of the work our educators and families are doing to make science accessible, engaging, and inclusive for all learners," said Sandra Lopez Greenfield, PSRC multilingual learner lead, to The Robesonian. "This opportunity allows us to showcase our district's commitment to innovation and family engagement at a statewide level."

Lopez Greenfield leads the Multilingual Learner Program at PSRC. The program serves students learning English while pursuing their education. Three previous STEAM Day events for families have been hosted before earning recognition from the state festival organizers.

The district thanked Science Supervisor Susan Hendrix for her leadership and dedication in helping make the achievement possible. PSRC expressed gratitude to UNC Pembroke for its educational partnership. Both organizations share a goal of providing opportunities so that all students thrive.

The North Carolina Science Festival represents one of the state's leading science education initiatives. More information about NCSciFest can be found at www.ncsciencefestival.org.
