A Greenville, NC funeral home has become a hot news topic this Halloween season, but for the wrong reasons, after four bodies were found buried behind it.

In early October 2024, skeletal remains of four individuals were found in an outbuilding behind Barrett Funeral Home, located at 402 N Greene St in Greenville.

The Greenville Police Department launched an investigation after the remains were uncovered, potentially dating back to the 1990s. This discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised numerous questions about the funeral home's past operations and practices.

"Officers responded with the Pitt County Medical Examiner’s office and confirmed the discovery to be human remains. While they were on the property, 3 other bodies were discovered in the outbuilding.

The remains were taken into possession of the ME’s office for identification. It appears the remains had been there for quite some time, possibly even dating back to the 90s. The deaths of the individuals do not appear to be criminal in nature."

Facebooker "Buck Acklin " streamed a live feed showing law enforcement officers transporting human remains from the site of discovery. The Pitt County Medical Examiner’s office has taken custody of the remains for identification purposes. Investigators suspect that the remains had been in the outbuilding for a significant period, potentially since the 1990s.

Barrett Funeral Home, also known as B.G. Barrett Funeral Home, had been a longstanding establishment in Greenville. The previous owner of the funeral home was Boris Giles "Butch" Barrett, Sr. who passed away in January of 2023, leading to the closure of the business. This transfer of ownership likely led to a more thorough inspection of the premises, ultimately revealing the hidden remains.

As of October 7 the Greenville Police Department is actively investigating the case. Authorities are working to determine the identities of the deceased individuals and the circumstances surrounding their improper storage or disposal.
