‘How Music Got Free’: See Trailer to New Doc About the File-Sharing Boom
How Music Got Free is the latest music docuseries from Paramount+.
The two-part docuseries explores the file-sharing boom of the late 90s and early 2000s that turned the music industry on its head. Among the executive producers of How Music Got Free are Eminem and LeBron James.
A press release on the docuseries states, “From New York City, to Los Angeles, to the small factory town of Shelby, North Carolina, the two-part series features the quirky genius of the heretofore-unknown ‘pirates,’ the drama of the FBI investigations and convictions, and the frontline accounts of music’s biggest artists and executives. An unbelievable story of cunning, illegality, celebrity, and innovation, these are the events that changed the music industry forever.”
How Music Got Free hits Paramount+ on June 11. Its trailer can be viewed below.
Another Music Docuseries from Paramount+
How Music Got Free and its trailer release comes a couple of weeks after the trailer release of Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza, another docuseries from Paramount+.
According to the streamer, Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza ” … depicts the exciting and strangely symbiotic 30+ year relationship between the iconic festival and Perry Farrell. Throughout the series, Farrell reconnects with what the event has become and reflects on the festival’s cultural significance across multiple genres and decades.”
Lolla made its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. A number of outlets had positive reviews, with USA Today including it in their round-up of the best movies from this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The outlet noted back in January, “When it comes to music documentaries, this year’s Sundance embraces a definite nostalgia factor, and ‘Lolla’ goes all in on the good, the bad and the naked dudes that mark the early 1990s history of the alt-rock festival.”
Director Michael John Warren told The Wrap when Lolla premiered at Sundance that he hoped Gen Z would watch and learn some things from Gen X.
Warren said, “When we were kids, we were pissed about the environment, police brutality, what was going on in the Supreme Court … There’s a lot here that speaks to youth culture across 30 years and I feel, as a Gen Xer, I’m really connected to what Gen Z is going through or about to go through.”
All three parts of Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza are available to stream now on Paramount+. Its trailer is below.
