Dan Schneider Sues ‘Quiet on Set’ For Defamation
Less than two months since the release of the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, Dan Schneider sues Investigation Discovery for defamation over his portrayal. Schneider is accusing the company of falsely implying that he sexually abused children who worked on the Nickelodeon series he created and ran.
Dan Schneider Sues The ‘Hit Job’
In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday (May 1) in Los Angeles Superior Court, the All That creator says his depiction in the five-part documentary series is a “hit job.” While two child sexual abusers worked on his shows and were charged and found guilty, Schneider says he had “no knowledge of their abuse,” condemned it, and added he “was not a child sexual abuser himself.”
“But for the sake of clickbait, ratings, and views — or put differently, money — Defendants have destroyed Schneider’s reputation and legacy through the false statements and implications that Schneider is exactly that,” the lawsuit says.
Warner Bros. Discovery, which distributed the project on Max, and producers Maxine Productions and Sony Pictures Television are also named in the complaint. Schneider seeks unspecified damages and a court order forcing producers to remove the allegedly defamatory portions of the series or have it taken down completely.
In a statement, Schneider acknowledged “mistakes I made and poor judgment I exhibited during my time at Nickelodeon” but said he had “no choice but to take legal action against the people behind it.” He added, “They went beyond reporting the truth and falsely implied that I was involved in or facilitated horrific crimes for which actual child predators have been prosecuted and convicted.”
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV debuted in March and chronicled Schneider’s rise as a prolific producer on Nickelodeon. Among the allegations made towards him in the series are that he largely tolerated and perpetuated a toxic workplace, made sexual innuendos in his shows and behind the scenes, humiliated the cast and crew, and belittled his female staff.
The docuseries often inserts Schneider’s statements when it came to the child sexual abusers and toxic workplace — all of which he denied having involvement in or knowledge of. After the show’s release, he appeared in an interview with a former iCarly cast member. Dan denied hiring dialogue coach Brian Peck, who was found guilty of sexually assaulting Drake Bell.
In the complaint, Schneider says the producers implied that he sexually abused children who worked on his shows. I watched the docuseries, and I didn’t note that implication. The docuseries certainly points at Dan and Nickelodeon studios for not conducting thorough background checks to protect the children. The documentary pointed out how his behavior was inappropriate and weird and how he made the cast and staff feel uncomfortable around him, but it did not provide any incriminating evidence that explicitly called him a child sexual abuser.
To support allegedly false claims that he was a child predator, the lawsuit says that the docuseries explores the “perversion” of shows he created. There are statements from people in the docuseries that Schneider “made” children “do things that were very weird” (like sit in a hot tub fully clothed while Amanda Bynes was in a bathing suit) in “setups that referenced porn” (like Ariana Grande pouring water over herself on multiple occasions), according to the complaint.
Notably, the docuseries stated that Schneider was not found to have engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior after the investigation was launched.
