In order to book the role, the actor reportedly told a little white lie to book his debut gig. While reminiscing about the show’s guest stars in a new interview, Sex and the City director and writer Michael Patrick King revealed how Cooper made it happen.
King said, “Bradley Cooper — first job — said he could drive a stick to get the job because the character drove a Karmann Ghia. 4:00 in the morning, another Friday outside 14th Street, and I said, ‘Bradley, this is where you drive. You take off.’ And he goes, ‘I can’t drive a stick.’" Since he'd already booked the gig, King changed the script for him. “And so we fixed, changed, pivoted,” he said. “Sarah Jessica’s character Carrie crawls out of the Karmann Ghia and walks herself home.”
The actor played Jake, a cocky smoker who meets SJP's drunk Carrie at a party with Stanford Blatch, her best friend. Cooper appeared in season 2, episode 4, which is titled: "They Shoot Single People, Don't They?” In this episode, Carrie struggles with an unflattering magazine shoot in which she is on the cover with the headline that reads: "Single & Fabulous?"
Cooper's Kissing Experience
In a previous interview with Metro in 2012, Cooper, 48, said kissing Sarah Jessica Parker was a nightmare for him. He told the publication at the time, “I did Sex And The City, and I was very nervous because I was driving a stick shift, a standard Porsche, and I thought I was going to bang Sarah Jessica Parker’s head against the dashboard. That was all I was thinking about.”
He continued, “And then right before we shot the scene, this guy came up, and I think he said, ‘SJP does no tongue. No tongue, man’. And I was like, ‘Who’s SJP?’ So she kisses me, then straddles me in the front of the car, and all I kept thinking about was keeping my tongue as far back in my mouth as possible. It was a nightmare.” However, Cooper did compliment Sarah Jessica Parker and admitted that the kiss became a disaster because of him and said, “But she wasn’t – she was great.”
Guest Star Feedback
Parker shared what she found to be “the hardest” part about welcoming guest stars on SATC. “There’s so many people that have come onto our show — some for five hours, some for five days, some for two days,” she said. “There is to me nothing harder than stepping onto a moving train where everybody knows literally all the ball bearings of the machinery ... and they’re joking and talking and reading before and talking and laughing, someone calls action we’re like … it’s the level of comfort." Besides Cooper, other cameos on the series include Elizabeth Banks, Matthew McConaughey, John Slattery, Will Arnett, Justin Theroux, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kat Dennings, Alanis Morisette, Jon Bon Jovi, and Andy Cohen.
Sex and the City’s sequel series, And Just Like That..., will premiere its second season Thursday on Max.
