Hilary Duff Starves Herself Following Gwyneth Paltrow’s Diet
Hilary Duff is admitting she often follows a controversial “starvation diet” that Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow created. The How I Met Your Father star recently called out Paltrow and said, “Gwyneth’s in trouble for saying this, but sometimes I try to just drink coffee in the morning and starve off my hunger.” Duff, 35, noted that she wakes up “really hungry.”
The actress and singer then said she’s “obsessed with those cauliflower rounds,” which she described as “super clean,” and crisps them up in the air fryer. The Lizzie McGuire alum added that she usually tops them off with egg salad, a fried egg, avocado, or vegan sausage.

The mother of three made sure to point out that she also consumes “lots of calories” while making her kids’ lunches. “If we’re being honest, yeah, I eat a chicken nugget in the morning while I’m packing lunches and there’s one left over. Pop it down the hatch!” In terms of physical activity, the actress shared that she works out with a trainer and focuses on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or Tabata. She described Tabata as “seven different workouts with a rest period in between but basically no stopping. It’s like [an] aggressive HIIT, and when there’s not enough time to work out, a Tabata is a great way to get a hard workout in fast.”
Paltrow’s Problematic Wellness Routines
Paltrow made headlines in March for disclosing her daily wellness routine, which horrified fans, fellow celebrities and medical professionals alike. With an IV in her arm, the Goop founder explained that she takes part in “a nice intermittent fast.” She begins her day with coffee, as it “won’t spike” her blood sugar, and abstains from eating until about noon. The actress, 50, went on to say that she really likes soup and has “bone broth for lunch a lot the days.” The Iron Man actress added that for dinner, “I try to eat, you know, according to Paleo. So, lots of vegetables. It’s really important for me to support my detox.” Paleo diets consist of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds.
She sparked criticism in January when she called a salad a “detox.” While showing how to make the salmon “detox” salad in a video, Paltrow said, “What’s so nice about this reset is: there’s so much food in it! And it’s all really nutrient-dense.” After taking a bite from the salad, she concluded the video by saying, “You would never know that this was a ‘detox.’”
As noted by Healthline, which describes “detox” as a “popular buzzword,” the body does not require detox diets or “expensive supplements” to eliminate toxins. They note that the body “has a sophisticated way of eliminating toxins that involve the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs.” There is “no evidence” that “supports the use of these diets for toxin elimination or sustainable weight loss.” As for ways that individuals can optimize the body’s “natural detoxification system,” Healthline notes these include limiting alcohol intake, prioritizing sleep, drinking more water, and reducing one’s intake of sugar and processed foods.
