Amy Schumer would have been the lead for Barbie, had it not been for some pesky shoes. After a new trailer and more images of the cast were released this week, Schumer's interview about why she turned down the role of Barbie has resurfaced.

The comedian addressed why she opted not to star in Sony’s live-action movie with The Hollywood Reporter last month. At the time, Sony's version was described as a "fish-out-of-water tale about a woman who gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough."

Four months later, Schumer announced she was dropping out, citing “scheduling conflicts.” She pointed out that “they definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it.” Schumer's plan for Barbie was to be an ambitious inventor. She noted that the studio asked that her invention be a high heel made of Jell-O. When Sony sent her a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate, that's when she knew she was out. “The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’”

Warner Bros. Pictures took over in 2019 with Greta Gerwig as writer and director and Margot Robbie as the titular character. Rounding out the cast is Ryan Gosling, Kinglsey Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa as Ken. The other Barbies are Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Ana Cruz Kayne, Sharon Rooney, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp and Ritu Arya. Emerald Fennell plays Midge, Michael Cera is Allan, America Ferrera plays Gloria, Ariana Greenblatt plays Sasha, Connor Swindells plays Aaron Dinkins, Jamie Demetriu is a Mattel Executive, Will Ferrell is a Mattel CEO and Helen Mirren is the narrator.

Barbie hits theaters on July 21.
