In an interview, she explained that it's the first time that she's ever written a song with her real name, Ashley Frangipane.
"It's just me. No wig, no colorful hair, no character, and it's about my life and about my relationship that the world has watched so closely and so vehemently in the past year and a half," Halsey expressed. The relationship she talks about is her relationship with G-Eazy.
On Twitter, Halsey said that she cried the whole time she was recording the song, but now she feels "proud and empowered".
